How Does Plasmacluster Technology Improve Indoor Air Quality?

If you have a 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid, your car includes Plasmacluster's air purification technology, a trademark of SHARP Corporation.

If you're looking for a specific button to purify the air in your cabin, there isn't one. Plasmacluster's technology is built into the car's air conditioning system and operates through the driver-side air vent by releasing both positive (+) and negative ions into the cabin, aimed at purifying the air and reducing airborne viruses and mold.

SHARP created the method of using plasma discharge to give water a positive charge and oxygen a negative charge. The positive (H⁺) and negative (O₂⁻) ions of Plasmacluster attach to the surface of airborne viruses and other particles, turning into OH radicals. With their powerful oxidizing ability, OH radicals quickly remove hydrogen (H) from the protein on the surface of viruses and other particles, breaking down the protein and reducing activity. The surface of things like bacteria and allergens is mainly made of protein. Extracting the hydrogen atom (H) from this structure deactivates the unwanted substance. Additionally, the OH radical combines with the extracted hydrogen atom (H) to instantly form water (H₂O), which is released back into the air.
